Choosing the Perfect Chandelier for Your Home

With the vast array of chandeliers available in various sizes, finishes, and styles, selecting the perfect one can be a challenging task.

In this blog, we’ll explore how to select the ideal chandelier that enhances the ambiance and style of your home.

Selecting the Right Size Chandelier

Choosing the correct size chandelier involves considering several variables, which can make the process seem daunting. The right chandelier should be proportional to the room’s dimensions and the furniture within it. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine the appropriate size:

Determining the Chandelier’s Diameter

To find the suitable diameter for your chandelier, measure the length and width of the room in feet, add these two measurements, and then convert the sum to inches. This gives you the approximate diameter for your chandelier.

Room Length: 16 feet
Room Width: 8 feet
16 + 8 = 24 feet
The chandelier should be approximately 24 inches in diameter.

Determining the Chandelier’s Height

Measure the height of the room from floor to ceiling in feet and multiply this number by 2.5 to find the chandelier’s height in inches. This guideline is mainly for pendant-style chandeliers.

Chandelier Size for Specific Areas

Two-Story Foyer with Staircase

Besides the general rule that the chandelier’s bottom should be at least 7 and a half feet away from the floor. For two stories, what you also need to consider is how will it look from the second floor. In general, staircase chandeliers will be a good choice for space. In term of placing, below are two commonly seen guidance:

  • The general guideline is to use the second floor as a reference point. Hanging the chandelier slightly lower than or at the top of the staircase. This way, when you are at the top of the staircase, the top of the chandelier will be at your eye-level.
  • On the other hand, many designers advocate for independent placement just to make the chandelier the focal point or placing the chandelier about another architectural features. For example. if there is a large transparent window above the door, it should be centered in the window for best visual result from outside.

Long Hallways

For long hallways, determine the chandelier’s diameter by multiplying the hallway’s width in feet by 2.5.

Hallway Width: 8 feet

When decorating a long hallway with chandeliers, ensure they are:

  • Centered in the middle of the hallway
  • Spaced 8 to 10 feet apart
  • At least 7.5 feet from the floor to the bottom of the chandelier

By following these guidelines, you can select a chandelier that not only fits well within your space but also enhances the overall aesthetic of your home.
